Who are carers/ caregivers?

A carer/ caregiver is commonly referred to anyone who looks after a family member, partner or friend who needs assistance due to age, illness, or disability. Carers/ caregivers could be anyone, children or adults, family members, friends, neighbours or hired professionals. Carers/ caregivers such as doctors, nurses, social workers and domestic helpers falls under the category of Formal Caregivers, while family members, partners and peers of the individual receiving care, are informal caregivers. The service scope of Agewhale mainly focuses on supporting the latter group, whose needs are often overlooked. Besides, many people do not realise they have become carers/ caregivers—especially working adults who juggle jobs ad family responsibilities. Therefore, recognizing one’s caregiving role is the first step to get support.

What challenges are caregivers facing?

Caregivers often face multiple sources of pressure while caring for their loved ones, including time constraints, physical exhaustion, financial stress, and emotional strain. For working caregivers, the challenge of balancing job responsibilities with family care can lead to constant worry, loneliness, and eventually caregiver burnout.

Full-time caregiving can make it difficult to maintain a social life or continue with hobbies and interests. Even when leisure time is available, many caregivers feel guilty for spending time on themselves. Prolonged social isolation can shrink their personal networks overtime and increase the risk of depression.

Physically, the repeated need to lift, carry, or assist the person being cared for can lead to persistent fatigue, chronic pain, and a higher risk of illness. The physical demands of caregiving should not be overlooked, as they have a real impact on the caregiver's health and long-term well-being.

How can carers/ caregivers seek help?

Caregivers may often feel overwhelmed by the heavy demands of their role. Fortunately, there are various forms of support in the community that can help ease this burden.

Respite Care Services

Caregivers absolutely deserve breaks from their duties. Respite care services offer temporary relief, with professional carers looking after your loved one during your time away. These services are provided by government bodies and local charitable organisations.

However, community resources are often fragmented, making it hard for time-pressed caregivers to know where to start. That’s why Agewhale offers tailored care navigation, hoping to bring together a range of services and support schemes to help both caregivers and care recipients better navigate their caregiving journey.

Support and Understanding

If you need emotional release, apart from sharing with your family and friends, you can consider joining caregiver-focused social media groups or online communities where others share similar experiences. Peer encouragement and shared wisdom can be a powerful source of support. Agewhale has also compiled blogs and stories centred on the caregiver experience, which may offer reassurance, insight, and a sense of solidarity.
