Working Caregiver

Jan 6, 2026

What should I do if I am exhausted from being a working caregiver/carer and is desperate for a break?

It’s normal to feel exhausted among carers/ caregivers, of which a large signal reminding you to take a rest. Caregiver burnout is a recognised condition, especially when you are balancing full-time work and caring responsibilities. Start by looking into respite care, which offers professional relief—this can be for just a few hours or longer periods.

You can also reach out to District Elderly Centres or Nonprofit organizations’ to learn more about available support services, such as home support services, medical escorts and emotional counselling. Agewhale also collected mental health care support for carers

Most importantly, you do not have to carry this alone. Joining carer/ caregiver support groups or online communities to share feelings and tips could offer you much needed relief and connection too!

Is that possible to negotiate a flexible working arrangements with my manager?

Yes – Raising your need for flexible work is a fair and reasonable request, especially as a carer/caregiver. You can start by arranging a formal meeting and preparing a simple proposal that outlines your needs, for instance; flexible start times, working from home 1-2 days per week, or compressed hours.

When speaking with your employer, try approaching the discussion from both perspectives: show how you can still maintain your productivity while managing your caring responsibilities. Such a constructive and cooperative tone can help move the conversation forward.

Although Hong Kong does not have legislation mandating flexible work, as more companies are open to family-friendly practices, carers/ caregivers are gaining increasing flexibility and support on balancing their caregiving role and job. Check out Agewhale's guide for working caregivers on how to talk with managers about flexible work

How do I talk to my boss about my caregiving responsibilities?

Talking to your boss about your caregiving role is not about asking for sympathy — it’s about helping them understand your reality. Choose a suitable moment, like a private one-on-one meeting, and explain your current situation in which you're caring for a family member and it affects your availability during certain hours.

Meanwhile, you might suggest practical solutions, such as adjusting start times, or proposing temporary work-from-home arrangements.

Make sure to reaffirm your commitment to your job, which builds trust and helps your employer understand that you are seeking for a balance instead of avoidance.

Making caregiving visible in the workplace is a vital step towards change. It takes courage to speak up, but you are never alone.

Should I quit my job to care for my family member?

This is a deeply personal and difficult decision. Take time to ask yourself:

  • Can my loved one accept help from outside support?
  • Are there options like flexible work, unpaid leave, or part-time roles?
  • Am I emotionally and financially prepared for the impact of quitting?

As a caregiver, you may instinctively put your family first — but your own health, financial stability, and sense of purpose also matter to your family’s long-term wellbeing. If you can find a sustainable way to combine care with work, it may benefit both you and your loved ones.

Before deciding, consider consulting a social service agency about financial aid or care services that could reduce your burden. Agewhale could also provide you with a customized caregiving plan that best suit your situation.

Whatever choice you make, if it’s thoughtful and aligns with your family's needs, it is a valid and worthy decision.
